Happy Goth How To: Safely Remove a Decal

Whether your decal has had a long and glorious life, your style has shifted, or you’re simply making room for a new one, removing it properly matters. The last thing you want is scratched paint, warped coverings, a damaged trim, or peeling at it with your nails until you regret every decision that led you there.

The good news is that decal removal does not need to be dramatic. With a little patience and a gentle approach, you can remove a vinyl decal from your car, laptop or window safely and cleanly. But first lets set some ground rules!

RULE #1

As tempting as it is to pick at a corner with your nails, it is best not to. Using your nails can make the deacls tear into awkward little pieces, and leave you with sore fingers or broken nails for your trouble. It usually makes the whole process messier, not easier. Not to mention that no one wants to be in thier nail artists bad books!

RULE #2

Do not use a metal scraper, blade, knife, or anything sharp to remove a decal from your car. Even if it seems like the quickest option, it can easily scratch paintwork or damage the finish on the surface underneath. A decal is not worth gouging your car for.

RULE #3

Dont Rush! Taking something as life proof as our decals off any surface was never going to be a quick job; so plan ahead because I'm telling you a quick 5 minute job it is not!

Okay now lets get into it!

Step 1: Start with warmth

When it comes to loosening a decal, less is more, too much heat can cause problems of its own. You do not want to overdo it and risk adhesive burn or damage to the finish underneath.

In most cases, warm water is best. A warm, wet cloth held against the decal can help soften the adhesive and make the vinyl easier to lift.

But dont be a loon and go pouring water on a laptop. In this case if you arent sure about a damp warm cloth you can use a hairdryer on the lowest heat setting, constantly in motion over the decal for a few seconds at a time.

You are not trying to melt anything off, just gently encourage the glue to let go.

Step 2: Give it a push

Once the adhesive on the decal has been softened, the safest way to lift it is with something firm but smooth .

A plastic card or a rounded scraper is ideal. Use it to carefully ease up an edge and gently push under the decal little by little. Slow and steady is the goal here.

You should not need to force it. If it feels stubborn, apply more warm water and give it a bit more time.

Step 3: Work slowly!

The safest way to remove a decal is to work patiently.

Trying to rush the job is usually what leads to scratches, torn vinyl, or frustration. If the decal starts coming away in smaller bits, rather than digging at it harder, keep going gently, you may need to go back to step one a few times to keep the adhesive soft.

A calm approach is always kinder to your car.

Step 4: Clean off any sticky residue

If youve followed the instructions this bit should be as easy as warm water and a cloth, However you may need to use a sticky stuff remover like googone to remove and stuborn bits of adhesive. always check this is compatable with your surface before you use it!

In short

If you want the simplest version, here it is:

  • Use warm water, not too much heat
  • Do not use your nails
  • Do not use a metal scraper
  • Use a plastic card or rounded plastic scraper
  • Work slowly and gently

Removing a decal safely is all about patience and using the right tools. A little care goes a long way, and your paintwork will thank you for it.

And once the old decal is gone? That sounds like a perfectly good excuse for a new one.
